I bred Blue Topaz with Amazing today, Also Thyme and Blackie had a date. Two days ago Thyme had a date with Snowball. He likes the ladies. ;-)Crowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13450175157643194938noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301634336414380208.post-73830378855092003212011-12-22T21:47:00.000-08:002011-12-22T21:47:31.857-08:00success!I was able to get Rosemary and Thyme, my American Chinchillas bred this evening. I hope she takes, and blesses us with some babies.

I put other pairs together on the latest full moon. I did not watch to see if they made a love connection, but they were together for about 30 minutes. We shall see on the next full moon!
knock on wood!Crowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13450175157643194938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301634336414380208.post-2071301567947911772011-11-04T21:57:00.000-07:002011-11-04T21:57:39.722-07:00What a Day!Today we had an ARBA Registrar come out to the farm to register some of our rabbits and some of our friend's. We had tattoo guns, paperwork, rabbits, and laughter. But mostly we all had the love of rabbits. Rabbits are wonderful companions, and they really do love to cuddle. I have a few, and am always so happy to see one go off to it's forever home. What joy they bring!

Coming off the glow of the day, I am thinking about giving Granny a rabbit, (she just lost her husband) so she can have a little fuzzy friend to tend to, talk to and love. She is alergic to cats and dogs, but rabbits are different when it comes to allergies. What do you think?

Anyway, we were much to busy to take pictures, so I will just leave you tonight, with your own mind's picture.

Happy Day.Crowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13450175157643194938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301634336414380208.post-90584310022050567142011-09-05T16:35:00.000-07:002011-09-29T16:06:47.222-07:00Tahoe x Yoda second litter of 5

So we are down to two kits in the nest box of Blue Topaz. Here is the lighter kit. Tummies were full on both this evening, which I was happy to see. Good news, I will take..
Crowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13450175157643194938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301634336414380208.post-90436744828382809092011-06-01T11:52:00.000-07:002011-06-01T11:53:45.478-07:00kindling and breeding
Yesterday Blue Topaz kindled on day 34. I found 4 live kits, one dead, and one fresh skull. I took out her nest box and filled it with clean wool pine chips and field hay to make sure the scent of birth was gone from the nest. Blue Topaz first try was that of a crime scene with no survivors. I was happy to see some alive kits this time out.

I gave Blue Topaz back the box and did a little rabbit prayer to keep the newborns safe.

This morning as I checked the kits, one was on the wire dead. It had a tooth mark right behind it's eye. I quickly went for the nest box, and was relieved to see 3 kits still alive and the tummies looked full. On my mid morning check, I found another kit on the wire. It was untouched, warm and looked fine. So, back in the nest it went.

I hope Blue Topaz keeps her babies alive.

Meanwhile, I bred Tahoe again this morning. I will put her in with Yoda again this evening. I know I will have to keep her air conditioned for a Summer birth. But it is worth it. She had some gorgeous babes and mothering came easy for her.

The next go-around, I will breed them at the same time, so I have a good Mother to foster parent in the event Blue Topaz fails again.

Such tiny precious little creatures.
The familiar rituals of dancing around the Maypole and the crowning of the May Queen made it a popular seasonal celebration in medieval England. ”May Day is associated with spring and fertility, the sowing of the seeds. It is a rural tradition,” says Julie-Marie Strange, senior lecturer in Victorian Studies at the University of Manchester. ”It’s things like May Day that remind us we were once an agricultural community. We’ve clung on to these traditions and I’m not sure why we’d want to get rid of them now.” - James Morgan, BBC News
~crow
She looked like she really enjoyed Yoda's company, so I left them together for about an hour. They were so cute nose to nose sitting together when I had to put Blue Topaz away. I may let her visit again in the morning.

I am recovering from the losses, but have heard from experts that this is what happens for first time, even second time Moms. It is odd to me, even if people say it is normal. I have other animals that birth with no problem. My nanny goat, first time mother, pushed out a big bony kid all by herself on a cold February morning. Cats have kittens with ease. Bella had her pups fine. It just seems odd. I had no impulse to stomp my babies or eat them at birth!

I need to do some reading on why this happens.
Crowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13450175157643194938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301634336414380208.post-59201448705425013912011-04-25T13:19:00.000-07:002011-04-25T13:19:02.670-07:00First time mother Blue Topaz.
I had all but given up that Topaz was going to kindle, when I did my morning check of the nest, I found two dead kits and two kit heads. It looks to me that she stomped her poor babies.

Blue Topaz was difficult to breed and she is difficult to handle. I had a feeling she might not do well as she is such a nervous rabbit. She even tries to bite and box me when I go into her cage to feed her.

She is much different than Tahoe, who is the epitome of a sweet and loving rabbit. I am thankful for her. She is doing well with her kits, everybody seems well fed and all things are calm in the nest. A couple more days and the babies will have their eyes open!

A drastic difference in the same atmosphere.
Crowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13450175157643194938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301634336414380208.post-19130512545511977722011-04-23T12:04:00.000-07:002011-05-11T11:38:52.381-07:00Engish Angora Kits in the Nest
